TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

Both the reading and the lecture are talking about whether it is possible to maintain a human presence on Venus, but the speaker disagrees with the perspective made in the reading that it is impossible for three reasons by pointing out these challenges can be possibly overcame by not establishing a station on the surface but on the 50 km above the surface like a balloon.

To begin with, according to the author, the atmospheric pressure is far greater than the earth's. But with the method to build a station 50 km above the surface, it can be easily solved because the pressure is equal to the earth's. That is why the opinion is challenged heavily.

Then the passage claims that people have to supply oxygen and water from earth which makes it impractical which is also disagreed by the speaker. He then states that the Venus' atmosphere contains some chemical materials such as carbon dioxide and sulfuric that can be used to produce water and oxygen. We don't need to carry these thus it is not a hard challenge. Therefore, the reading passage has been contradicted again.

Moreover, with little sunlight on the Venus' surface, humans could not get enough electricity to use as power by the author. On the contrary, the professor mentions that since the station will be floating 50 km above the surface where the atmosphere is not thick, there will be enough sunlight to make power. What's more, people can use both the direct sunlight and the reflect ones.
