TPO-40 - Integrated Writing Task Many scientists believe it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on Mars or the Moon. On the other hand, conditions on Venus are so extreme and inhospitable that maintaining a human presence there would

In this set of materials, the reading passage explores the drawbacks of maintaining a human presence, such as the station, on Venus, and the professor's lecture deals with the same topic. However, he casts doubts on these disadvantages, and in the lecture, he provides three specific points to substantiate his opinion.
First, although the reading passage suggests that the atmosphere pressure at Venus' surface is too heavy for humans and for equipment, the professor argues in the lecture that the atmosphere pressure above ground is relatively same as Earth
's atmosphere pressure. Therefore, humans can still construct a station floating in the air, like a hot bloom.
Moreover, despite the statement in the reading that Venus contains sparse oxygen and water, the professor contends that carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid can be used to produce water. Then he supports this point with the fact that by using equipment and chemical reaction on the station, humans can make water from carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, which are abundant on Venus.
Finally, the professor asserts that clouds on Venus above ground are not thick and sunlight can penetrate through those clouds, whereas the author of the reading claims that clouds on Venus blocks most of the sunlight. The professor explains that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that solar power uses both direct and reflected sunlight to produce electricity.
In conclusion, the professor clearly identifies the weaknesses in the reading passage, and he cogently shows the central arguments are incorrect.
