The reading passage elaborately discusses about the use of glass as a building material in modern architecture and how it poses threat to the wild birds. Birds perceive glass windows to be open space and while trying to fly through them they are harmed. The author of the passage puts forward several solutions as to how the injuries of birds can be prevented, but, all of these solutions are contradicted by the points made by the professor who also gives valid reasons to justify them.
First of all, the author proposes the use of one-way glass rather than clear glass in big buildings. This will allow the occupants to see everything that is going on outside of the building, whereas, the birds will see the reflection of themselves and understand that they should avoid flying through it. On the other hand, the professor rebuts the suggestion made by the author by saying that the birds usually do not understand the difference between a mirror and a transparent surface. As a result, if they see the reflection of a tree or the sky in the mirror, they assume them to be the real sky or tree and tries to fly into them. Thus, the first solution proposed by the author is ruled out.
Second point made by the author focuses on using glasses with colorful designs. The author asserts that using window panes with thin strips painted on the glass will enable the people to see through them as well as these stripes will prevent the birds from assuming the glass panes to be open space. Contrasting this point, the professor says that birds will not be benefited with the use of colorful glass panes as they will consider the small openings to be holes and will try to fly through it. Again, it is insisted in the lecture that using window panes with very small openings might have helped the birds, but, this will make the room very dark and the occupants will have a hard time adjusting to the darkness.
As the final solution, the author avers that buildings equipped with powerful magnetic fields that emits an artificial magnetic field can guide birds away from the building. The passage asserts that birds use their natural ability to sense Earth's magnetic field which helps them to navigate while flying. Hence, creating an artificial magnetic field around the building might help the birds from keeping away from it. But, the lecture casts doubt on this point and justifies the reason for which the point is put to question. According to the professor, the birds use their ability to navigate using the Earth's magnetic fields only when they fly long distances or while migrating from one country to another. They normally use their eyes and the brightness of light while flying across short distances or from one side of the city to other. Thus, equipping buildings with electromagnets would not be of much help to the birds. The probability of saving the birds by installing electromagnets in the buildings is also contradicted by the justification made in the lecture.
