TPO 42 writing Integrated
Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between the glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass windows. There are, however, several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds.

The reading proposes a number of solutions to prevent injuries to birds while they fly near glass windows of buildings. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on each solution provided by the reading passage.

First, the author argues that replacing the regular windows with one-way glass which is transparent in one direction could be a desirable substitution which enables birds to recognize the windows as solid barriers. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that one-way glasses reflect the sunlight and accordingly act like mirrors. As a result, the birds may have problems since they may see the image of the sky or trees on the glasses and fly exactly though it.

Furthermore, the reading holds the view that painting colorful lines or other designs on regular window glasses could possibly cause birds to notice the stripes and avoid flying to it. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that the birds still see the openings in the design and perceive them as holes. Therefore, they may fly through it. To make this approach practical, the openings should be so small that birds can't notice them. But, that design would make the rooms inside the building extremely dark.

Finally, the reading passage asserts that since birds can sense and use the magnetic field for navigation while flying, equipping buildings with powerful electromagnets which sends signals can guide birds away from buildings. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that although birds utilize the magnetic field for navigation, they usually use the magnetic field while traveling long distances. Since in the cities, the birds usually travel short distances, they don't use this type of navigation. Therefore, the artificial magnetic field of buildings will have much functionality.
