TPO 46 Writing Integrated
In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.

The reading passage discusses several advantages of storing patients' medical record in electronic systems over traditional paper-based format. However, the lecturer finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading passage.

First, the author claims that using electronic record is cost effective since it would take no space and provides easier accessibility. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the new method is not actually effective since even those doctors who use electronic record still keep papers for emergency cases and also for legal issues related to their duty. Therefore, even though the electronic format is used, storage costs related to keeping papers still exist.

Furthermore, the reading holds the view that using electronic medical records would cause fewer errors to happen as a result of illegible handwriting. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that the use of electronic record does not solve the problem since most doctors use pen and paper while they are writing prescriptions and other staff enter the transcriptions to the system. Thus, they would make a mistake interpreting what the doctor has written.

Finally, the reading passage states that electronic records can help medical researchers by providing them with a lot of data from the patients’ record. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that there is strict privacy about keeping the patients' records secret. As a result, the researchers still have to go through a long way to get strict permissions including from the patients themselves to have access to their records and some patients may even block any access to their records except for their own medical purposes. Thus, the use of electronic record would actually don't make it that easy for researchers to have access to patients' records.
