In the United States, medical information about patients traditionally has been recorded and stored on paper forms. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping.
The professor casts doubt on the reading's idea that electronic medical record systems have many advantages. She asserts that the benefits are uncertain.
Firstly, according to the passage, the electronic systems can lower the costs for storing and transferring medical records, but the professor argues that the cost reduction is not significant, because the paper records won't be thrown up and are kept for the sake of emergency needs like signature. In the end, the storage cost compromises the cost reduction.
Secondly, the passage states that saving medical records on computers can avoid errors, however, the professor claims that it cannot eliminate the errors. it is because the medical records are usually at first written on paper and then interpreted into the computer.
