Essay topics:

Glass is a favored building material for modern architecture, yet it is also very dangerous for wild birds. Because they often cannot distinguish between glass and open air, millions of birds are harmed every year when they try to fly through glass windows. There are, however, several solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds.

One-Way Glass

One solution is to replace the regular, clear glass with one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction. The occupants of the building can see out, but birds and others cannot see in. If birds cannot see through a window, they will understand that the glass forms a solid barrier and will not try to fly through it.

Colorful Designs

A second solution is to paint colorful lines or other designs on regular window glass. For example, a window could have a design of thin stripes painted over the glass. People would still be able to see through the openings in the design where there is no paint, while birds would see the stripes and thus avoid trying to fly through the glass. Architects can be encouraged to include colorful painted patterns on glass as part of the general design of buildings.

Magnetic Field

The third solution is to create an artificial magnetic field to guide birds away from buildings. Humans use an instrument called a magnetic compass to determine directions—either north, south, east, or west. Bird research has shown that birds have a natural ability to sense Earth's magnetic fields; this ability works just like a compass, and it helps birds navigate in the right direction when they fly. A building in a bird flight path can be equipped with powerful electromagnets that emit magnetic signals that steer birds in a direction away from the building.

The article states that the glass used in the building are very dangerous for the birds as it cause the i passage provides three solution measures in order to reduce this harmful injuries to birds. However the professor refutes these all solution measures by stating that these all measures will not be effective as mentioned in the passage.

Firstly, the passage states that replacing of the regular, clear glass by the one way glass which is transparent in only in one direction will reduce in the birds injuries. However, the professor refutes this claim by stating that one way glass reflects as a mirror for the birds, so, the birds will not able to distinguish it. Sometime the glass reflects the picture of the sky and trees, due to which the birds may fly into it, which will result in the injuries to the birds.

Secondly, the passage claims that the use of colorful designs like a thin stripes paint or the any other painted patterns in the glass will result in the avoidation of the birds fly through the glass. In contrary, the professor refute this measures by stating that the opening that are left in the glass during the making of stripes for the observation by the people will cause the significant damage to birds. As the birds seem these opening as the whole and they try to fly through it. Opening should be completely painted but it will result in difficulty for people causing the darker room situation.

Thirdly, the passage states that creation of the artificial magnetic field will helps to guide the birds away from the building as the bird research show that they have ability to sense the magnetic field. But, the professor do not agree with this solution measure and he refute it by stating that the birds use the sense of magnetic field only when they used to travel for a long distance like migration from colder area to the warmer areas. During the shorter distance travel they used their eyes to find the direction, so, this measure will not work in this case.
