TPO 48 In recent years, many frog species around the world have declined in numbers or even gone extinct due to changes in their environment. These population declines and extinctions have serious consequences for the ecosystems in which frogs live; for example, frogs help play a role in protecting humans by eating disease-carrying insects. Several methods have been proposed to solve the problem of declining frog populations.

The article states that three theories which evidence the complete collapse of the eastern island. however, the professor in the listening passage cast doubts on these theories and explains that there is still no evidence that shows the actual reason for collapse and attacks each of the claims made by the theories.

First of all, in the reading, the writer begins by stating a theory which claims that deforestation, which, in turn, caused serious erosion, is the main cause of eastern island's collapse. The lecturer, however, disagrees with this point and he says about evidence shows that the cut palm trees were replaced by grassland. So, the absence of trees should not be the reason for the erosion.

Secondly, the passage posits that when native people cut and burned trees, the rats prevented regrowth by eating the fresh shoots before they could grow into large plants. With little food and no wood canoes to escape, the people perished. The professor opposes this point by saying that these rats were used as a food source as people found rat bones with chicken sources.

To sum up, both the professor and the writer hold conflicting views. they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
