TPO 49

The article states that there is whale, humpback whale, which takes advantage of stars to navigate, like humans. However, the professor explains that they are fascinating creatures but evidence shows that this whole idea would not be correct. He casts doubt on every author's reasons.

First, the reading posits that these whales seem to be so intelligent to navigate by stars. The professor refutes this point by saying that it seems that there is not a real connection between intelligence and animal's ability. He states that there are some birds which have this ability like ducks, but the evidence reveals that it is solely an average ability not a high intelligence.

Second, in the article it is claimed that because of the fact that these animals cannot depend on land features to maintain their movement in straight lines they use stars to navigate by. However, they might have some other external forces, the professor say. According to the professor, research has shown that they rely on magnetic field of earth. Their brain has a bio-magnetic sense which leads to orientation when they are migrating.

Third, the reading asserts that they have an unusual behavior. They look upward when they are swimming. The professor opposes this point by clarifying that this habit has nothing to do with spy-hopping. We also learn that it is rare but there some animals which perform this habit without that purpose, like sharks which do that merely due to the hunting.
