The passage and the lecture discuss whether humpback whales navigate by stars or not. The reading presents three reasons that support this idea. However, the professor in the lecture argues with all of them and believes none of them are convincing.

First, the passage claims humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to navigate by stars. However, the professor refutes this reason completely because there is no connection between intelligence and the ability to use stars for navigating. He examples ducks that navigate by stars but they aren’t intelligent animals at all. Indeed, it connected with the instinct of animals, not their intelligence.

Second, the reading states these whales migrate in straight lines which is possible just when they orient themselves by external objects or Force. However, the lecturer argues with this idea by pointing out that although the idea that humpback whales orient themselves by external objects or force is true, stars are not responsible in this case. Actually, it is the earth's magnetic field that forces the whales to migrate in straight lines by affecting their brains.

Third, the article claims they show some strange behaviors like spy-hopping that support the idea that they use stars for navigating. However, the professor opposes this reason by explaining that they don’t look upward to the stars. Actually, sky-hopping is a method for looking for other animals like sharks. Besides, they exhibit this behavior during the day that seeing stars is impossible. Hence, this behavior doesn’t relate to their ability to navigate by using stars.

Although the letter presents three reasons to support the idea that humpback whales use stars for navigating, the professor disagrees with all of them and explain why they are not convincing.
