TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task

The issue both the reading and the listening focus on is whale navigation, but the listening casts doubt at three main points.

At the first point, the reading states that whales seem to be intelligent enough for navigating by stars. Their well-developed cognitive ability seemingly provides sound basis to use sensory stimuli for orientation at night. On the contrary, the listening argues that there are no connection between intellectual ability and stars navigation. Other animals such as ducks also use stars to navigate, but ducks only have average cognitive abilities. This suggest that stars navigation is only animal instinct, and not connected to intelligence.

At the second point, the reading mentions that whales migrate in straight lines. Animals can only maintain straight movement with external forces or objects. So whales could use star to help them keep moving straight over long distances. According to the listening, whales do maintain direction thanks to external forces, but instead by magnetic field. Whales have a substance allowing them to sense the magnetic field, which helps them migrate.

At the last point, the reading believes that whales are observed to be spy-hopping, a behavior rare among marine animals. The function of spy-hopping is for whales to look at the stars, obtaining information to navigate by. However, the listening confirms that while this behavior is indeed rare, other animals like shark also spy-hopping. Sharks, unlike whales, do not migrate or look at stars, but look for animals insteam. Furthermore, spy-hopping in whales also happen during the day, where there aren't any stars. Thus, whales using spy-hopping to navigate by stars is just speculation.
