TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task

The passage and the lecture both discuss the humpback whales’ navigation mechanism. The reading claims that humpback whales possess an inherent celestial-based navigation system by means of which they can migrate to long-distance places without getting lost along the way. On the other hand, the lecture casts doubt on this ostensible navigational method by citing three reasons to refute the specific points made in the reading passage.

First, the author posits that thanks to their well-developed brain, humpback whales are highly intelligent animals as compared to most other species, empowering them to navigate their way through the ocean by simply following the stars at night. The professor, however, contradicts this assertion by highlighting the fact that there are, in fact, other animals such as ducks that rely on the stars to find their way around, whereas they only have an average intelligence level. Therefore, there is no direct association between the overall intelligence of a species and its ability to navigate with the stars.

Second, the reading asserts that since humpback whales migrate in straight lines, they have to use the stars as the external objects indispensable for long-distance navigation. The lecture, nonetheless, disputes this assumption by arguing that there may be another explanation. Endowed with bio-magnetic materials in their brain, humpback whales can sense the Earth’s magnetic field and utilize it to adjust their straight directions towards their far-flung destinations.

Third, the article declares that the spy-hopping behavior observed in humpback whales is an effective technique by which they can keep track of the stars. In contrast, the speaker rebuts this view, contending that there exist other species exhibiting the same behavior while lacking a celestial-based navigation ability. For example, sharks perform this action just to hunt for preys. Furthermore, humpback whales engage in spy-hopping not just at night when the stars are visible, but during daylight as well. Thus, according to the professor, it stands to reason that spy-hopping has nothing to do with the ability to navigate by the stars.
