TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

The passage and the lecture offer two opposing explanations on the mechanisms by which humpback whales migrate long distances. While the text lists reasons to support the hypothesis which states that humpback whales navigate by the stars, the professor counters this argument by another hypothesis stating that they may navigate using the earth's magnetic field.

First, although the text asserts that humpback whales seem to have a remarkable intelligence through which they could use the sky for orientation due to their ability to make use of complex, abstract sensory systems, the professor contends that other animals, like docks, have average cognitive abilities, yet they are able to instinctively migrate long distances.

Second, unlike what the text has to explain about why those whales migrate in straight lines, the professor asserts that humpback whales can use an external sign other than the stars at night for directionality; they are possibly able to use the magnetic field of the earth due to the existence of a chemical in their brains called "biomagnetide".

Third, the professor provides an alternative explanation to the "spy-hopping" theory in which he suggests that humpback whales are not the only ones exhibiting this kind of behavior. In fact, sharks, which don't migrate, are observed to have this behavior while they hunt during the day. So the idea that spy-hopping of humpback whales is explained by their tendency to look at the stars is merely a speculation.
