The reading and the lecture are both about the elephant's abilities which make the people excited. The author of the reading feels that some behaviors of the elephants surprise the public. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is the opinion that those mentioned fascinating behaviors of the elephants are misunderstood.

To begin with, the author argues that elephants feel their dead are approaching when they become elder. The article mentions that the elephants want to be alone; thus, they are moving far places. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that teeth of elephants become week, therefore, it's hard for older elephants to chew grass, so they are searching for a soft one. Additionally, he says that soft grass grows near the water.

Secondly, the writer suggests that elephants have artistic behavior. In the article, it's said that the elephants can draw shapes such as flowers or even themself. The article, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the elephants have sensitive ears, so the lecturer of the elephants teaches theme to draw specific lines by touching or heating on their ears. He noted that the elephants can't distinguish the shapes on their own. For instance, they cannot differentiate between shapes of flowers, humans or lines.

Finally, the author posits that the big animal such as lions and tigers are not frightening for the elephants; but, the mice are. He mentioned that the elephants back away when the mice come across. In contrast, the lecturer position is that the elephants are not scared of the mice, but they are unfamiliar to them. Similarly, he added that based on experience in the zoo, the elephants get accustomed after a while with the mice, so they didn't express any sign of fears or reaction to the mice, they totally ignored them.
