The reading passage mainly talks about several surprising elephants' behaviors and supports them with specific reasons. However, the listening lecture disagrees with them and claims they are misunderstood by giving specific reasons.

In contrast to know when they are about to die, old elephants leave their herds just because their teeth are not sharp anymore. Thus, they have problem with chewing and have to seek softer vegetation as food resource. Besides, softer vegetation is always near water which cause that old elephants always get close to water and finally die there. that is why their bodies are always be found neat water.

According to to the lecture, elephants' painting skill is trained by human 15trainers but not born with. The trainers will stroke elephants' ears when they are painting. As elephants' ears are very sensitive, the trainers are able to use certain way to control the directions of elephants moving paintbrushes. Therefore, elephants are just painting lines that trainers force them to paint instead of pictures. In conclusion, after practice, the elephants just remember the paintbrushes moving route instead of learning how to paint.

The professor in the lecture also explain that elephants try to get away with mice or small mammals not because they are afraid with 26 them but are afraid of unfamiliar animals just as most of animals' natural instincts. An experiment is mentioned in the lecture, people made several mice get along with elephants for a while. At the beginning, the elephants did try to get away with these little mice, but once they got used to little mice and found out they were not threatened, they did not mind mice anymore.
