The passage states that salinity of the Salton Sea can be reduced by several ways which reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health. It provides three cogent ways. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on these ways and refutes them by providing some points which contradict the ways.

First off, the reading asserts that one option is direct removal of salt from the lake's water in special desalination facilities. On the other hand, the professor explains that this idea is problematic. She brings the fact that by evaporating the lake's water, some solid remains. The main part of them is salt but some parts are other chemical solids which are toxic. Wind moves the solids and if it breathes by people it would be definitely unhealthy.

Furthermore, the passage holds the idea diluting the salt level in the lake with water from the ocean. The professor opposes this way. She says this option is not acceptable because it needs pipelines and canals which must be set in long distance from ocean to the lake. Because of limited resources in the government's budget, There is not enough money for paying for infrastructure.

Finally, the passage states that constructing a wall to divide the lake into several sections would be another solution to control the lake's salinity. However, the professor says that this is a skeptical solution. She says this is not a proper way in the long-term because these walls are really vulnerable. They might be destroyed by an earthquake. by collapsing the walls the high solid water would mix with low solid water again.
