TPO-54 Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they respond to the specific concerns presented in the reading passage. The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what s

The reading suggests various solutions stop the water salinity of Salton Sea lake in California which poses major threaten for the lake. However, the narrator thinks that every suggestion made by the author is neither practical nor realistic.

First the reading suggests that removing salt from the lake`s water  would be a great solution. By pumping the lake`s water into a in a  special desalination facilities and heating it up, the water will evaporate leaving the salt and dissolved material behind. Then it can be returned to the lake as salt free water, after cooling it down . Even though, the professor admits that desalination would reduce the lake`s water salinity, she explains that this process will pose serious health risks. The evaporated water would not only leave dissolved materials and salts, but also chemicals like selenium that is really toxic for people who are going to breath it as it would be carried out by wind and mixed up with the air that population breath in  . Therefore, this proposition is unrealistic as it has dangerous health consequences.

Another solution that mentioned in the reading is delivering ocean water through pipelines or canals, to  dilute the salt in the lake. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this idea by explaining that bringing the ocean water to the lake is not a very practical solution. The local government may not have enough funding for constructing new pipelines and canals for such long distance- about 100 km . Thus, this solution also is not practical.

Finally, the passage illustrates that another possible solution is constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections, where the water salinity of the large section will stay under control and allowed to increase in the  small sections . On contrary, the professor indicates that this solution is not durable, because of the geographical location of the  lake, where it`s very common to intense geological activities to happen, like earthquakes,  are very common. She explains that those walls will collapse the first time there is a major earthquake, and eventually, low saline water in the main section will mixed back in with the high salinity water of the small sections . Therefore building this wall is really a short term solution.

To sum up, the author proposed three ways of dealing with water salinity in Salton Sea lake and therefore restoring lake`s overall health. Unlikely, the narrator challenges each proposition by indicating it`s major drawbacks.
