The reading and the listening both discuss whether Amtrak, a type of intercity train in the US, should be sold to private companies or not. The author supports the critic’s ideas believing that the US government should not own Amtrak anymore. The lecturer, however, strongly opposes these critics by stating three reasons against the reading’s suggestions.
First, the author claims that Amtrak is a waste of money for the government, as the administers spend a great deal of money to provide US residents with Amtrak routes all over the country even in remote districts, which have fewer populations. A few people use this means of transportation, therefore these costly, useless services result in losing quite a bit of money every year. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this by expressing that the prime purpose of Amtrak is to supply all citizens in the US with commuting facilities whether they live in remote areas or not. This is injustice for those individuals living in farther areas that officials sell Amtrak to private companies since they stop serving Amtrak routes in these areas.
Second, according to the passage, Amtrak exploits government financial supports by having cheaper tickets which is unfair to other private companies for transportation that do not receive any funds from the government. Nonetheless, the professor supports a contradictory view as compared to that of the reading, she describes that the government does grant other private companies as well. For instance, in the airline industry, it builds center towers, pays for staff in airports, and supplies satellites that forecast weather. If the government did not support these private industries, they indeed would not be able to survive.
Third, the passage goes on to mention that commuting via trains is not very popular among US residents. For this, the government should invest money for more favored means of commuting services instead of funding Amtrak. Nevertheless, the professor disagrees with this statement by explaining that people do not use Amtrak because it is slow and has low quality. In fact, if the government invests more money in this industry for upgrading the trains, the general public will travel with these trains more frequently, much the same way people use trains for traveling in such places as Japan and Europe.
