Both the reading and the lecture discuss stories about the Spartacus. The author claims that several views about the Spartacus' life have made him an appealing hero. The professor states that Spartacus was a real person, but many stories about him are not accurate and rely on inaccurate stories and refutes each aspect.
First, the reading explains that Spartacus' original goal in his combat against Rome was one everyone can empathize with he wants to Rome. The speaker denies this story by saying that this was not their only goal. After attacking, they started marching toddles. Soldiers brought back everything they could, and it contained many valuable things. This was not only for revenge.
Second, the passage states that Spartacus's initial success in the battle against powerful Roman made him a superhero because the Roman empire was large and powerful. The lecturer contends this idea and claims that the Roman empire did not serious at first and sent only a small group with simple equipment to fight against Spartacus. Since they were weak, they lost. But if Rome had sent the best soldier, Spartacus' soldiers would have defeated quickly.
Third, the author expresses that in fighting against Rome, Spartacus librated Roman slaves. The professor opposes this reason and explains that there is no strong evidence for this happening. All the people know where the origin of this story is. In the eighteen century, European started the slavery movement, and they needed one symbol to imitate that; people wanted to inspire a hero.
