TPO1-TASK1

The reading passage states that a policy which compels companies to offer their employees the choice of working a four-day workweek for 80 percent of their normal salary would be benefitial for all three of economy, companies, and individuals. The professor in the lecture casts dout on the points made in the reading.

First, considering the article shorthening the workweek would provide benefits for the company. In contrast the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that this policy would not affect company profit in the way reading suggests. The company should spend more money to hire new workers since they should pay the cost of the training new employees. Besides, fife benefits like medical benefits are the same for both four-day jobs and five-day jabs. In addition, by hiring more new employees, the company should provide more office space and more computers. These additional cost would cut into company profits quickly.

Second, The readings claims that the option of choosing a four-day workweek would result in decreasing the unemploymet rate. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes the information presented in the reading and makes the point that, as he aformentioned, hiring new workers is costly hence the company would go for another choice of and asking their employees to work overtime and expect them to the same amount of work expected from a five-day employee. Accordingly, not only would no additional job be created, but also current jobs would be more unpleasant.

Third, the auther in the reading passage puts forward the idea that it is better for the indivisuals to work four day a week. On the other hand, the speaker contradicts the idea and adds that by choosing this four-day job, though, individuals have more free time to invest in their personal life, the quality of their life would be reduced due to its high risk, low job security and less chance of advancing the job. The four-day workers are more prone to loose their jonbs during economic downturn. Furthermore, they would be passed over for promotions because the companies would prefer five-day employees for management positions in order to ensure continuous coverage and consistant supervision.
