TPO4-TASK1
Both the reading passage and the lecturer are discussing whether the dinosaurs were endotherms or not. the reading passage states that in contrast to other modern reptiles, dinosaurs were endotherms because of their different characteristics from modern reptiles. However, the professor in the lecture casts doubt on the points made in the reading stating that many scientists do not think that these points can prove that the dinosaurs were endotherms.
First, considering the article, discovering dinosaur fossils in Polar Regions is an evidence for categorizing them as endotherm animals, since only animals with a higher constant body temperature, in comparison to such cold environments, could be active in Polar Regions. In contrast, the professor in the lecture contradicts the idea and further explains that when the dinosaurs were living, the Polar Regions were warmer than today; most of the year warm enough for the animals that were not endotherms to live in. Besides, in cold periods of the year, polar dinosaurs could migrate to warmer places or hibernate like some other reptiles.
Second, the reading claims that the position of the dinosaurs' legs can be connected to endothermy which allows them such physical activities like running. On the contrary, the professor in the lecture refutes the information presented in the articles and makes the point that their legs position does not necessarily mean that they needed high energy for running but legs in such position could support more body weight. The dinosaurs were large and being large was an advantage for them and that is why they evolve to have legs underneath their bodies.
Third, the author in the reading passage puts forward the idea that to have Haversian canals is an evidence for quick growing which is a feature of being endotherm. On the other hand, the speaker contradicts the idea and adds that although dinosaurs had Haversian canals, they also had growth rings showing stopping or slowing down the growth in some periods of time. And this periodic growth pattern is a characteristic of the animals that are not endotherms. Animals which can maintain a constant body temperature in all over the year, grow rapidly even when the environment is cold.
