TPO54 task 1

TPO54-task 1-

The lecture and the reading are both about the increasing level of salinity in the Salton sea in California. The reading provides three solutions to reverse this process. The lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading by mentioning that these solutions are not feasible to implement.
First of all, the author of the reading believes that one way to reduce the level of salt in the lake is removing them directly by using specific equipment. The author states that the water will evaporate, and the salt will get separated from that. On the other hand, the lecture states that although the extra salt would be left behind, other solid materials like selenium would be left behind too. These materials can cause severe problems because they are very toxic and can be spread out easily through the air.
Secondly, the author states that another approach for decreasing the salt level is using seawater and bringing that to the lake. The lecturer challenges this point by mentioning that this process needs plenty of funds and resources that are not within the government's reach. It requires the government to construct hundreds of kilometers of pipelines which is actually impossible.
Finally, the author believes that making walls and separating different sections from each other can prevent the lake from salting. The lecturer puts forth the idea that these salty lakes are located in places prone to geologic activities, and any intense activity like earthquakes can destroy and break the walls. Consequently, the sections will be merged together.
