Whether anting behavior is beneficial for birds.

Essay topics:

Whether anting behavior is beneficial for birds.

The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in whether anting behavior is beneficial for birds. To begin with, the reading says that anting may act as a kind of skin lotion help to soothe the skin irritation when they are changing feather. However, the listening implies that it is true that anting and changing feather happen at the same time, but this can be just a coincidence. Researchers find out that there are more ants in the summer time, so the reason of anting might because birds can simply find out more ants during that time.

In addition, the reading suggests that anting will produce a chemical call formic acid to help birds protect themselves from external parasites. Whereas, the listening do not agree with this explanation. If this hypothesis is true, birds that engage in anting behavior would contain fewer parasites than birds that did not attend. However, the evidence totally contradict to it. Birds engage in anting did not contain fewer parasites. Therefore, this explanation is incorrect.

Lastly, the reading indicates that anting behavior is just a way for birds to make sure ants taste good. Nevertheless, the listening is not convinced by this idea. Birds also rub on some other objects such as soap, but they did not eat these objects. As a result, it is unlikely that birds rub on ants is because they want to make sure ants tastes good.
