Silver coins

Essay topics:

Silver coins

The listening lecture totally opposes to the reading passage in whether sliver coins found in North America can represent connection between the Norse and native Americans. To begin with, the reading says that Maine where the coin was discovered is located far from other sites documenting a Norse presence in North America. However, the listening argues that there are many other objects that were found also originated in far places. The best explanation of the long distances can be explain by the travel of native Americans. They traveled for a long distance where the Norse live, and since they like to collect all sorts of things. They collect some silver coins and brought them back to there normal settlements.

In addition, the listening asserts that there were no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse. On the other hand, the listening implies that this hypothesis is incorrect. The Norse did not have a permanent settlement in North America, and at the end, they even went back to Europe. Therefore, there is a great chance that they pack up all of the valuable things, such as those silver coins, and brought them back to Europe. In other words, since those silver coins were valuable, the Norse might have brought them back to Europe.

Last but not least, the reading indicates that the Norse who traveled to North America would understood that these silver coins is useless to them. However, the listening suggests that the native Americans have some special value on certain object. They might find out the beauty of these silver coins and turn them into some beautiful necklace. Therefore, since these native Americans like the silver coins, they might trade it with the Norse. Indeed, the Norse will know that these coins are actually useful.
