Every Monday marks the genesis of a new week, and is witness to people dreading going back to work or school, eventually causing a delay in their estimated time of arrival. I, being no exception to this paradigm, was exceptionally late on one such Monday, leading to a series of events which remain etched in my mind.
My daily schedule started with an early morning, 15 minutes bicycle ride from home to my college. The directions were to go straight on a bi-lane road and then take a sharp left to reach my destination. Since there was no proper track or lanes for bicycles, I would ride on the extreme left, close to the footpath. The left turn was a blind spot, with zero or minimal visibility of the vehicles approaching from the other side and would often cause problems for which being extra cautious was the only solution.
On that particular eventful Monday of 2012, as I hurried to college, I was not attentive enough while taking the turn and suffered a fall by colliding with a motorcycle. The impact was not drastic but the shock led me to faint with minor injuries and bruises on my hand and face. I was immediately taken to the hospital, where the doctors confirmed that it was nothing serious and was discharged in 2 days.
The trigger of the accident that occurred was the low visibility rate of approaching vehicles and commuters, which not only affected me but also the motorcyclist, who was quick enough to reduce his speed, granting me the life I’m leading today. Another major breach of the laws for bicyclists was the absence of designated lanes and tracks and poor road condition. Cracks developed on roads with bad maintenance, cause the bicyclists to skid and trip which can have adverse consequences.
A solution to the bottleneck blind spot created at turnings is the use of convex mirrors, which allow commuters from both sides of the road to see the advancing vehicles and take necessary action by reducing speed and avoiding accidents.
The accident has added value to my life and since that day, I have become mindful and aware of my surroundings. A bicycle is a very useful commodity which ensures a quick and easy transit option for short distances. It is environment-friendly and with the correct incorporation of laws, the carbon footprint could reduce globally by many folds.
