Two years ago, radio station WCQP in Rockville decided to increase the number of call-in advice programs that it broadcast; since that time, its share of the radio audience in the Rockville listening area has increased significantly. Given WCQP's recent success with call-in advice programming, and citing a nationwide survey indicating that many radio listeners are quite interested in such programs, the station manager of KICK in Medway recommends that KICK include more call-in advice programs in an attempt to gain a larger audience share in its listening area.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

The statement asserts that in order to increase number of audience in its listening area, radio station KICK should uplift the number of call-in advice program. Proof of another radio station named WCQP has been put forwarded as they have been able to penetrate into larger audience in their area by doing the same. Also accoring to the arguer, a nationwide survey bolters that this step is bound to increase KICK’s popularity among its listening area. But this arguments are full with fallacies and unstated assumptions whose presense leaves author’s point unconvincing and unjustified.

To begin with, it has been said that broadcast of call-in advice program increased WCQP’s popularity in its local area. However, the same may not be true with KICK radio station which is located in a different location. There’s a possibility that Rockville is situated far away from towns and residents there are deprived of basic civic facilities. For example, there may not be good healthcare services in locality. So people there depend on the call-in service of WCQP where they provide an interactive sessions of renowned doctors and prevent them to go far away to nearby clinics to seek doctoral advices. If Medway where KICK is located have good hospitals and clinics , then this kind of approach will not work as most of the people will prefer to discuss about their health face-to-face rather than seek professional advice from unreliable persons.

Secondly, the reliability of nation wide survey that is conducted to bolster KICK’s idea is questionable. As it is not possible to question every individual in a survey , the survey needs to be conducted on specific sample size where this sample should represent the whole nation from location and age perspective. If only older generation are included in the survey, then the results may be skewed in favor of call-in advice as being unable to go outside(very old people) or being very busy for their living , they choose the shortcut faciility to call and seek advice. Also location will also matter to alter the result of the survey if surveys are mainly conducted in villages and countrysides rather than cities where ample civic services are provided nearby.

Moreover, the weakest argument of all is that KICK has implemented this idea two years ago but only recently their listener numbers have shown improvement. This may happen for some other reason other than what arguer has assumed like the introduction of other programs like news, entertainment which is not taken into account. If that is the case, then increase in call-in advice program in KICK’s schedule will have adverse effect on its listeners. Even if we assume that increase in number of listeners are indeed because of call-in facility, it may be because of high quality advisors or the appropriate timing of those programs. Unless each of these are taken into account, mere increase in call-in advice program will not boost the number of listener as the arguer expected.

To sum up, the argument cllearly shows lack of concise arguments which renders the argument unconvincing. The argument would become much more convincing if the author would have given the similarity in situation of local residents of Rockville and Medway , could support the survey with more information that would support that the survey indeed covers all ranges of ages and localities or could put forwarded certain points that could support that call-in advice programs are the only reason to increase number of listener for WCQP. In absense of all these, the argument is left unjustifiable.

Argument 1 -- OK

Argument 3 -- NOT OK. 'KICK has implemented this idea two years ago but only recently their listener numbers have shown improvement.' is wrong. It is not KICK but WCQP. It is not 'only recently' but 'since that time,'.
