Essay topics:

The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station.

Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our stations coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have just canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence would be needed in order to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

In the memorandum from the business manager of a television station, it has been stated that the authority thinks to take the initiatives to restore the time devoted to waether and local news to its former level based on the compiants about the station's coverage of local and weather news, after the brocasting time fixed for this has been reduced. However, before the recommendation has been executed, several questions must be answered.

First of all, Is the news broadcast now in the coverage of local weather news maintaining the quality as before? It is possible that the news now broadcast might not be the same as the ones brodcast before. After seeing the low quality news brodcast there, people might begin to cease watiching it. If the quality is good, then why do people cease to watch it. Instead they would claim to broadcast more. Instead they stopped to watch it anymore. If it is true, then the conclusions drawn in the argument have weakened significantly.

Finally, Are the tv programmes maintaining good-quality programmes? It is posssible that they might not be maintaining the programmes in good terms as before. It is possible that the tv programmes that have been broadcast now might not entertain the the people as it did before. Therefore, people might not be interested now in watching the tv programmmes, cease watching them, and start compaining. If it is ture, the argument does not hold water anymore.

In the conclusion, the argument, as it stand now, is flawed due to its over reliance on several unwarranted assumptions. If the questions asked above are answered, and the authority offers more evidence drawn based on scientific research method, it will be possible to avaluate the viability of the arugument to restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level.
