A recently issued twenty-year study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia investigated the possible therapeutic effect of consuming salicylates. Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, food-processing companies also add salicylates to foods as preservatives. The twenty-year study found a correlation between the rise in the commercial use of salicylates and a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by study participants. At the time when the study concluded, food-processing companies had just discovered that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods, and, as a result, many companies plan to do so. Based on these study results, some health experts predict that residents of Mentia will suffer even fewer headaches in the future.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.
It seems to be logical, at first glance, to agree with the idea that dweller of Mentia will suffer fewer headaches in the next years as compared with the previous. However, the argument relies on a couple of less credible evidence or even doubtful assumptions. In what follows, I will elaborate on them in details.
The 1st problem with the argument is that claiming an existing causal correlation between the use of salicylate in foods and decrease of headache based on the cited investigation is disingenuous. Maybe, there are other unknown or well-known factors which are engaged in the correlation between salisylate and headaches. To explain more, since experienced headache is the subjective issue rather than objective one, the researcher in the twenty years’ survey had better blinds investigators and participants from the existing of salicylate in the foods. But the author does not provide more information about double-blinding in the study. If the participant knows that their foods contain even tiny salicylate, they maybe report fewer headaches as compared with unknown conditions. Moreover, when the investigators knew this issue, they also maybe have a bias to report positive effects of salicylate on headaches. Plus, the author could not provide more information about the special foods companies which maybe obtain more profits when the results of the investigation have been manipulated according to their viewpoints or strategies.
Even we assuming that the argument gives additional information about factors that are involved in the correlation between salicylate and headache, there are other unanswered questions. Although salysilated could be used as a flavor additive in food, the people who will use these flavors and foods maybe do not like this addiction. Maybe Mentia’s people follow a healthy nutrition plane, and they are not eager to eat foods which are artifice with some flavors such as salicylate, and they want to consume original or natural foods. Also, the Media have various kinds of residents, and everyone has its favorite flavor or tastes. Therefore, the insisting on adding salicylate as flavor to foods as a way to use it's on headache remedy is the fallacious conclusion. Besides, some companies maybe are not eager to use salicylate as foods flavors, and Mentia denizen buys their foods from this type of foods companies.
Even if we know that Mentia peoples’ taste and flavors interest, there are exist other flawed towards the use of commercial salicylate on foods industries and decreasing headaches among these kinds of foods consumers. Although chemical formal of the salicylate alike to Aspirins, this does not mean that they have a similar alleviating effect. Maybe aspirin has another chemical element other than salicylate which is more effective than salicylate in headache decreasing. Also, to reach healing effects the people should use a certain amount of aspirin in the especial period. For example, there every aspirin drugs have own traits such as therapeutic dosage, how to use during the days or night. Only adding the infinitesimal amount of salicylate to foods, could not provide efficacious treatment effects on headache.
To fully evaluate this argument, we require to have more information. The first piece of information we need to know is the causal correlation between salicylate and headaches. We also require to know more demographic and other traits of the Mentia’s denizen. Finally, to improve the argument as a whole, it is greatly recommended to be charry about comparing the curative effects of aspirin with salicylate one.
