To reduce the electric expenses city council of Town X has proposed to switch from incandescent bulbs to LEDs in public buildings. The intention of city council is right that they want to reduce the electric expenses but the way they want to do it raised some questions. They provide two evidence for the conclusion that switching incandescent bulbs with LEDs can reduce electric expenses. One of them is that LED is having the same cost as incandescent bulbs, which means it does not have any effect on cost as they are same for both incandescent bulbs and LED's. Another evidence that because LEDs burn brighter than incandescent bulbs help reduce cost but this hypothesis need to answers some questions before we can conclude that it actually saves cost or not.
LEDs burn brighter than incandescent bulbs that is the reason city council want to make the switch but its possible that LEDs might be using more energy than incandescent bulbs that's why it burns more brighter. This can increase the cost instead of decreasing it. If that is the case then this might weakens the city council hypothesis. They should first do research about the energy consumption of LEDs.
Switching of Bulbs means to change in the current set up. For example there might be the case that LEDs might not be able to fit in the current set up of incandescent bulbs and if that is the case then it might lead to changing the current set up into the new set up which can increase the cost. Also in the scenario when incandescent bulbs are being switched gradually then it might happen that one set up is not fitting with LED and because of that the entire corridor bulb set need to be change. All these scenarios can lead to more cost and the fact that cost of both LEDs and incandescent bulbs are same this will lead to increase in overall cost. City council should do some research about this and then plan to make the switch.
City council have not given any evidence about the life time of the LEDs. It might happen that the LEDs life time is shorter than incandescent bulbs. If this is true then it might weakens the city council hypothesis as the cost of purchase for both bulbs are same and if LEDs have a shorter life time then it has to be changed more often than the incandescent bulbs and hence can lead to increase in cost. City council need to check this scenario before making the switch.
City council intention to reduce the electric cost is good but the way they want to do it need to be researched more.As the cost of both LEDs and incandescent bulbs are same then they should really focus to find answers about energy consumption, cost involved in switching the bulbs and life time of LEDs. These things have a direct impact on the cost so these are really needs to be researched before making a conclusion.
