The best way for a society to prepare its young people for leadership in government, industry or other fields is by instilling in them a sense of cooperation and not competition
The speaker is of the opinion that society should develop her young people in the way of cooperation rather than competition to achieve common goal of leadership in government, industry and other fields. From my point of view, there are two ways to it and I feel the speaker overemphasized the importance of cooperation.
First thing that comes to mind is differentiate the strong hold of each entity. there are benefits of cooperation likewise competition.
It is important for the young people to develop having the sense of discernment as to when one is to be implored between cooperation and competition. Take for instance, in a class where the lecturer gives an assignment to students in group, something is telling me that mostly, not because of the marks is the lecturer doing this at most times. as the lecturer is trying to build a sense of cooperation among group members with different idiosyncrasy. This will help in terms of adaptation socially at any point in time. At the long run, the goal is to achieve a goal in that group which might not be possible without cooperation. This can however be transferred to broad term i.e in government. Take for instance, for a political party to take over a region, cooperation is needed from the political members or else, there will not be progress in that political party.
On the other hand, competition is very important in leadership because it can serve as yardstick of measurement so as to measure how an individual or a group of company is growing. Take for instance, imagine a world with Iphone without Samsung. This will lead to monopoly of business and even Apple might not be able to monitor how far they've gone in relation to their competitors. Another view is considering a clime where there is no competition, there will not be variety of options even for consumers. Take for instance, Coca-Cola have the monopoly of market without Pepsi challenging as a competitor, consumers will not have variety of choices.
Another opinion is competition leads to development and innovation. A vivid example is 2002 when Nokia came to Nigeria, there was no other cellular products then. As soon as Samsung came challenging the position of Nokia, there were variety of new cellular phones from Nokia aside from the Nokia 3310 then.
Similar example is the Network providers. without competition from various network providers, who knows ,may be we will still be struggling with 2G network by now.
Finally, i stand to summarize by saying the distinction between cooperation and competition is the matter of when and where to cooperate and to competite. If the ultimate goal is to defeat covid 19, cooperation is welcome. But in scenario where technological advancement is a priority, you might be tempted that cooperation weigh more than competition but competition actually drive innovations.
In sum, I believe cooperation helps development at micro level i mean within an organisation whereby competition drives development at macro level.
