The first step to self-knowledge is rejection of the familiar.

Essay topics:

The first step to self-knowledge is rejection of the familiar.

The statement suggests that one needs to reject the familiar in order to get on the path to truly know oneself. However, I think that rejecting the familiar is not necessary; one can, in fact, use the familiar settings to develop self-knowledge. Also, one can gain self-knowledge by observing our reactions with respect to our familiar surroundings and use this to draw patterns and understand them, thus leading to self-knowledge.
First, one can gain self-knowledge by observing how we react to the incidents which occur in our surroundings. If a particular incident takes place, one can consider what our instincts were: on analyzing those instincts and drawing patterns from a wide range of observations, we can learn more about ourselves. For example, I attend my college regularly, and there is one lecture I detest. The professor does not explain her points well and is often admonishes students if they do not complete the assigned work in class. However, I have noticed that I never feel sullen even after getting a scolding - this made me aware that I did not easily feel bad about getting scolded or punished. Thus, I learnt more about myself from a familiar setting. If I were to reject the familiar settings, I would never have observed this phenomenon and gained the corresponding self-knowledge.
Second, if a person is in an unfamiliar setting, he/she will spend more time learning about the unknown factors in their surroundings rather than learning about themselves. Thus, doing away with the familiar may lead to gaining knowledge about the surroundings itself rather than oneself. For example, a tourist visiting a unfamiliar country would want to see the monuments, historical places and enjoy local food rather than gaining self-knowledge. Thus, it can be said that unfamiliarity can reduce the chances of gaining self-knowledge, at least for some people.
It can be argued that being in a familiar setting can provide distractions; distractions can stop a person from looking inward into their minds and try to learn more about themselves. However, it must be noted that distractions will be there anyway, and any person who wants to gain self-knowledge must learn to ignore them. A person who gets easily distracted will not be able to gain self-knowledge irrespective of the conditions around him/her.
Thus, being in a familiar settings may enable a person to observe patterns in their behavior on encountering certain incidents. Also, unfamiliarity can enable a person to gain knowledge about the unknowns rather than about himself/herself. Thus, I think that rejection of familiarity cannot be considered as the first step to gaining self-knowledge; on the other hand, familiarity can be used to know more about oneself.
