Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the
recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and
supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your
position.

The most immediate concerns of any Government naturally lies in relieving their citizens from the troubles they are burdened most with. In a developing nation this would include education, poverty alleviation, employment issues, regional or communal disputes, technological impediments, and so on. On the other hand, developed nations might be grappling with issues related to national security, economic crisis, immigration, etc. The future issues are usually common to both and that would include nuclear and biological warfare, global terrorism, economic stagnation, environmental catastrophes and extinction to name a few. At any rate, all these problems whether immediate or future, need to be solved by the respective governments with thorough deliberation and prescience. The debate on whether to focus on solving the present or future issues, though is a tricky one as both tasks appear to be interdependent and also, equally demanding.

To begin with, consider a government intending to develop the economy of a country, designs a strategy of mass industrialisation. For aquiring the land for the same, forests will be cleared, indigenous natural habitats would be encroached upon, rural and agricultural lands will be converted to barren fields, people would be displaced, and so on. No doubt, with the rise of industries and corporate sectors the economy will sky rocket and employment opportunities will alleviate the associated problems. Urban cities will develop, technological advancements will flourish and the once poor nation will be able to compete with its developed counterparts. However, these developments will come at a hefty price. The environment and the natural bounty of the country will be highly at stake for the developmental activities. Not only that, but with mass displacement of people from their natural lands or origins, will result in a cultural crisis. These people will try to adapt to the newer places they settle in, foregoing their indigenous cultures and traditions. The gradual dying of these native cultures will create a void in the nation’s overall culture. Besides, this nation contributes to global warming by way of their mass industrialisational activities and this will affect other parts of the world too. Thus by attempting to solve the most pressing issue, this government overlooks the future implications of its policies.

We can take the example of India and Indonesia. The reckless developmental activities in both these nations, have created an enormous pressure on their natural wilderness. The results have been excruciatingly large. Although both have had achieved an impressive level of economic exellence, yet they both have together contributed to about half of the world’s pollution. Both have witnessed a serious decline in the population of some of their rare animal and bird species. Hence the governmental policies and intentions to better the economies of these countries have endangered the natural balance. This not only affects their own countries but have implications in the overall climate change of the entire world. The future health and stability of their upcomming generations have been seriously compromised. Today Indonesia ranks second in deforestation and Indian cities of Agra and New Delhi ranks among the top 10 most pollutated places in the world. Hence despite their progress industrially and economically, their governments have failed to foresee the near future problems. Such a government policy is obviously not pragmatic and a development of such nature, is underisable. Hence, any step taken to solve an immediate issue has a direct and indirect future implication. Infact it can be said that it is only the immediate issues that pile up to become bigger issues in the future. Hence, governments must focus on solving the immediate issues, but in a manner that that it does not hamper the future.

In addition to the above, nuclear warfare or any type of warfare is a concern of almost all nations. But it is rarely seen as an immediate issue. But if the governments do not take steps in the present to avert any impending war, then little can be done to avoid it in the future. Building friendly relations with countries, making dialogues, sharing of mutual interests, promoting trade, exhange of culture, etc. can be viewed as present actions that can help the governments to eliminate chances of hostility and the subsequent wars. Hence these activities should be prioritized in the present and they should be seen as immediate concerns such that the future of the country is secured.

In a nutshell, although the governments should necessarily focus on the immediate problems of today, yet their policies need to be pragmatic such that the nation’s future is not compromised with. It is ussually the present problems that is unsolved or solved without deliberation, accumulates as future problems. The above examples illustrate how reckless policies to solve immediate concerns can bring about so much insecurity for the nation and to the world in general. In contrast, a well thought out plan to alleviate the present problems without endangering the future state of the country should be the agenda of the governments. In other words, the present policies should be such that there is no scope for future problems to arise. But that again is an ideal world. So, governments should strive to minimize the future confrontations by taking steps to alleviate the present problems through a discerning strategies.
