The well being of society is enhanced when many of its people question authority

Essay topics:

The well-being of society is enhanced when many of its people question authority.

Since the agricultural revolution which engendered the modern human civilization and society, we have always observed some evidence of social hierarchy and indeed, some form of governmental authority to maintain law and order in the land, protect its borders and culture against foreign aggressors and promoting education and technological developments. With the exponential increase in human population, it is no longer possible to practise direct governance as in the Ancient Greek city-states, which is why representative democracy is practised instead, in which the people grant their representatives and in turn, government powers and authority to decide on complex issues on behalf of the people, with the welfare of the people as the primary aim. The ability to question of this authority is a double-edged sword and I present the following arguments to buttress my conditional stand.

Matters pertaining to national security involve secrets and discreet matters which cannot be disclosed to the public eye. This is because of the very delicate nature of such matters, which at times invlove of a complex array of diplomatic ties, secret or otherwise, of various agencies and governments across the world. When the national security of a nation depends on foreign technologies which need to be imported, such matters must be handled by a select slice of high-level bureaucracy itself in order to maintain an element of surprise with aggressors as well as an absence of a trail of evidence which might link and connect the various secret meetings, negotiations, as well as transportation and delivery of such technologies. Governments spend almost 5%-7% of their defense budgets in developing indigenous defense technologies which would certainly depreciate in their value, if the aggressors already have the plans for construction and indeed, disabling them due to public knowledge of such projects. Thus, for the greater good of national security, and security of the society a government is bound to protect, secrecy is necessary, where questioning of the government's authority in refusing to disclose such sensitive information may actually be detrimental. For example, the abrogation of article 370, which rescinded the special status to Jammu and Kashmir was a governmental effort to integrate the territory into the Indian nation and assimilate the peoples into the Indian society. This leads to a better national consensus and identity, which actually helps in defense, as the border villages actually serve as the second line of control, as villagers report and point out suspicious activities to boder police and the army.

The governmental authority is also a force to which criminals must answer to. This partially provides a sense of structure in society, where certain laws and rules are laid down by the government for a better standard of living among its people, where they needn't fear for their lives and property everyday to be wrenched from them by mightier foes. This governmental authority protects the minority sections of society from marginalization as well as the dangers of a primitive order, where physical or social prowess are reasons enough to appropriate personal property and life. Furthermore, this authority also allows the government to allocate resources to various projects, ranging from space, education, technology, healthcare, etc. A desultory questioning of this power and consequently the decisions, for the sake of simply questioning or arguing for political gains, would serve no end to the society at large, because by its very nature a democratic government is elected by the population to decide on such complex matters which the people do not have enough knowledge to deliberate and decide on. The government, by way of access to larger database of information, experts and technologies, is better equipped to do these tasks, and people should trust this authority with which the government decides on these matters. For example, ISRO would perhaps not have managed a monumental feat of launching 104 satellites simultaneously in space, had they not received the requisite government funding. Healthcare programs such as life insurance policies with premiums of Re. 1 for economically-backward people help them cover healthcare costs without being forced to borrow from loan-sharks at exorbitant rates.

However, this is not to say that governmental authority is absolute. A democratic government is legitimized by the support of its own people and hence, is answerable to its citizens. A need for transparency and accountabilty results in tempered questioning of various decisions which is necessary to realize and understand various decisions and the rationale of the authority behind them. Courts and legal systems are constituted for this very purpose, to provide an oversight which can check the authority. An absolute loyalty and unquestioning attitute toward governmental authority leads to demagogues like Hitler and Mussolini consolidating and wrestling power from the people themselves, with disastrous consequences in turn, like the Second World War. A questioning attitude is required to keep a society democratic, because questions to the authority allow the people to judge whether the government is indeed taking decisions with the welfare of the people in mind. Corruption and venality are also invariably rooted out when people are watchful of governmental activities and understand the decisions. In the end, such questioning allows the people to direct the government's attention to new problems and situations which require new and updated laws, such as gay marriage, environmental and pollution norms, etc. which exist today but did not before the late 20th century.

Thus, the power of questioning is definitely a power which must be exercised regularly to keep the government in check and ensure that the welfare of all people remains as the primary goal. However, this power must be used with care, as incessant questioning undermines governmental authority, which ultimately weakens the social fabric of a nation.
