The role of the primary schools in the education of young children still remains a questionable and controversial matter that always spurs discussion and a lot of debates. Some people perceive that the sole role of a school is simply to teach linguistic and scientific material and to help improve the child cognitive skills. On the opposite side, some other people thinks that it’s the school primary role to educate the child and work on building new good members of the society, in addition to its role in teaching scientific materials.
The belief that the role of a school is solely scientific is quite prevalent among many people who think that the education of ethics should be the responsibility of the parents. Proponents of this view perceive that for a child to be grown up properly, a real and effective contribution from the parents’ side is indispensable. It is a kind of sharing together the responsibility of building a child. The school should only take care of the scientific aspects while the parents at home should take care of the ethical aspects. According to this point of view, this approach would help each wing to focus more and to give more attention to one aspect.
On the contrary, the opponents of the aforementioned vision see that the ethical aspect of the education cannot be alienated from its scientific counterpart. Proponents of this view perceive that; unless the school is moving on the same track as the parents at home, the child will never be able to digest some theoretical ethical principles that are taught only by the parents at home. The applicability of principles and ethics is pretty crucial to help the child digesting them.
Personally, I would perceive that it is imperative for the school direction to be effectively contributing in injecting good principles and ethical concepts into the minds of the young children. However, this should not be considered as a substitution or an alternative to the family role in this regard. Neither the parents, nor the school direction can ever achieve alone the ultimate goal of building a good society member from all aspects. Therefore, the school and the parents need to keep working together and ensure being on the same wavelength, in what concerns rising up new society members.
