The table below gives information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000.

The table shows the distance of travel route made in different modes by a British person in two years: 1985 and 2000. According to the data given by the table, it can be clearly seen that there is an increase of the average distance travelled per person by overall modes of transport.

Having an analysis by the number of miles, the car is used mostly for farthest journeys and the mileage meter has a dramatic rise about 1500 miles. Admittedly, the train is the most popular public transport for a long trip, only 289 miles were travelled in 1985 in comparisons with 366 miles at the beginning of 20th century. Obviously, long distance has gained more reputation than local one and miles travelled has doubled for long distance bus while the local one has halved. A lot of people used to go 255 miles on foot in 1985, whereas, in 2000, there are 23 miles less. Riding a bicycle was almost preferred more than calling a taxi in 1985 and the opposite one in the next 25 years. Finally, other modes of travel have recorded a slight growth.

Another thing to point out is that the total number in 1985 represents two-thirds of the ones in 2000.

In conclusion, there is a tendency in using more vehicles than the healthy options such as bicycle and walking.
