The displayed bar chart provides information about the share of households in owned and rented accommodation in two countries (England and Wales) over the period from 1918 through 2011.
As an overall trend, the proportion of households who rent accommodation had increased during the display period. Meanwhile, the proportion of households who own accommodation had decreased, respectively. In no year had these rates exceeded 80% or less than 20%, especially, in 1971, the market shares of these two types of housing were equal.

Meanwhile, the proportion of households owning a home increased from the lowest point of about 22% to nearly 70% over the 83-year period from 1918. At the end of the period, this had dropped to just under 65%.
The proportion of households owning houses and the proportion of households renting houses remained constant and remained at about 32% and 78% between 1939 and 1953, respectively.
