The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011 Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant

The bar graph details information about the proportion of English and Welsh households in rented and owned accomodations from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there were considerable upward trends in the rate of housing ownership, while the percentages of rental accommodation saw a dramatic fall over the period shown. Another interesting point is that in 1971 both owning and renting remained equal.

In 1918 the proportions of rental housing remained high, at about 76%, however the figure for owned accomodation stood at only 22%. After that the rate of housing ownership experienced opposite trend, and coming to 1971 both stood at same point 50%.

During the rest of the period the gap between rented and owned accomodation widened towards the end of the period. From 1971 to 2001, housing ownership continued to increase to almost 70% and rental accommodation declined to just over 30%. Over the last decade the proportion of households in owned accomodation dipped slightly by 5%, as a result rental housing experienced negligible increase.
