The bar charts illustrate the changes in the proportion of household owing and renting an accommodation in England and Wales in a 93 year period starting from 1918 to 2011. Overall, there are two general upward and downward trends. The percentage of household in rented houses decreased. Whereas those who owned their residence climbed.

It is clear that in 1918, the majority of renters are nearly 80%. However, there are declined in the next 2 decades at under 70% and plateaued to 1953. After that, the proportion went down in the following year to the lowest point in 2001, at just over 30%. Then, there is a slightly growth to a third by 2011.

Conversely, just over a fifth who owned houses in 1918, and remain stable between 1939 to 1953 approximately at 32%. The numbers of people who rented houses grew steadily to the peak around 68% by 2001 and slightly decreased to two thirds over 10 years. It is interesting that percentage of owners and renters equaled by the middle of the period.
