The chart below illustrates the proportion of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. It can be clearly seen from the chart that, households in owned accommodation and households in rented accommodation had a reverse trend in comparison with each other.

According to the chart, the percentage of family which rented an accommodation in 1918 stood at just under 80 per cent and almost 4 time as high as the other one. Then, this figure decreased sharply to one half from 1918 to 1971, equal with the proportion of the households which did not have their own house and keep fall significantly to approximately 30 per cent untill 2001 before increased slightly in 2011.

By contrast, between 1918 and 2001 saw a dramatic rise in the percentage of family in their own accommodation from just above one fifth to just below 70 per cent. Finally, the proportion of households live in their own house accounted for over 60 per cent in 2011, twice as many as the percentage of the family rented an accommodation.
