In detail, breakfast contains the lowest amount of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar. Only 14 percent of sodium is used in breakfast while saturated fat and added sugar share an equal proportion of 16 percent. However, there is a steady rise in the amount of the three nutrients consumed in lunch. A rapid growth of 15 percent and 10 percent occurs in the consumption of sodium and saturated fat respectively, though the corresponding figure of added sugar eaten in lunch only increases by 3 percent.
With regards to dinner, it follows the growing trend in the amount of the three nutrients. First, there is a massive threefold increase in the use of sodium, rising from 14 percent in breakfast to 43 percent in dinner. Likewise, a substantial increase in the amount of saturated fat and added sugar can be noticed, with their consumption accounting for 37% and 23% respectively.
Compared with lunch and dinner, the percentage of sodium and saturated fat consumed in snacks is comparatively lower. The amount of sodium used for snacks is the same as that used for breakfast, at 14%, while the consumption of saturated fat in snacks falls from a high of 37% in dinner to 21% in snacks. In contrast to the decrease in the use of sodium and saturated fat, the amount of added sugar constitutes a significant proportion of the typical snacks, increasing from 16% in breakfast to 42% in snacks.
