The pie charts compare the rate of British learners able to speak languages other than English from a university in England between 2000 and 2010.
It is clear that Spanish was the most popular second language for British students in both two years. Additionally, the percentage of students who can speak German only as other language remained unchanged over the period shown.
In 2000, the rate of British students able to speak Spanish only was highest, at 30%, while the figure for people communicating by just English was noticeably lower, at 20%. Meanwhile, the proportions of learners who can speak French only or another language were the same, at 15%. In addition, 10% of total students from that university were the figures for individuals able to speak German only or two other languages.
In 2010, the percentage of British students speaking Spanish beside native language gradually rose to 35%, whereas the figures for students able to communicate another language and two other languages witness a small increase, by 5%. Moreover, three other groups had the same figure and stood at 10%.
