The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.

The line graph compares the amounts of energy consumed from different sources in the USA and their expectation throughout a half-century from 1980 to 2030 based on a 2008 report.

Overall, fossil fuels have been the dominant type and will continue to grow until 2030. In contrast, nuclear and renewable energy have represented a small proportion of total energy use.

Looking at the detail, in spite of some fluctuation in the first 15 years, the consumption of petrol and oil dramatically rose in the following years and is expected to reach approximately 50 quadrillion units (50q) by 2030. The utilization of coal is predicted to double over the period, rising constantly from just over 15q in 1980 to almost 30q in 2030, and overtook that of natural gas in 2015. The figure of natural gas fluctuated around 20q by 2015, before it is speculated to level off to the end of the given period.

On the other hand, nuclear, solar/wind, and hydropower showed small quantities of fuel consumption, with less than 5q in 1980. The amount grew slightly for both nuclear and solar/wind and it will continue this minimal growth till becoming around 5q by 2030. Nevertheless, hydropower will remain in the same figure as it was in 1980.
