The graph below shows the average number of UK commuters traveling each day by car, bus or train between 1970 and 2030.

The line graph shows the average number of British people commuting on a daily basis by three different means of transport from 1970 to 2030.

It is clear that the car is the most popular means of transport for UK commuters over the period shown. While the numbers of the population who use the car and train increase gradually, the number of bus users decreases steadily.

In 1970, there were around 5 million British people using the car each day, while the bus and train were commuted by about 4 million and 2 million people respectively. In 2000, the number of people driving the car rose to 7 million and the number of train users increased to 3 million. Meanwhile, there was a slight reduction of half the number of those commuting by bus.

By 2030, the number of people who drive the car is predicted to reach approximately 9 million and the number of train users is also expected to rise nearly 5 million. By contrast, the bus could be a less popular choice, with only 3 million commuters.
