The line graph illustrates the trend of consumption of spreads from 1981 to 2007covering Margarine, low fat and reduced spread and butter.
Overall, butter has always dominated the other two spreads till 1996, post which due to introduction of low fat and reduced spreads, butter was replaced. Consumption of Margarine was also dipped and subsequently was the lowest consumed spread among the three.
The consumption of butter which was just above 140 grams during 1981, touched its peak in the year 1986 of 160 grams, post which it declined and reached to its all time low between 40 grams to 60 grams in 2007. Margarine has been constant throughout the period ranging between 80 grams to 100 grams, however after 2001 is witnessed a sharp dip to 40 grams in 2007. Low fat and reduced spread was introduced in the year 1996, and immediately saw a spike in the 2001 with just over 8- grams. Although its consumption reduced for 2007, it was more than Margarine as well as butter.
To sum up, consumption of spreads has reduced overall and with the introduction of low fats and reduced spreads it is the butter and Margarine which are most affected.
