It is clear that the level of sulphur dioxide emissions was considerably higher than that of smoke released throughout the surveyed period. However, it is noticeable that both types of exhaust fumes given were nearly eliminated in the last year of the 400-year period.
Since 1600, London had seen a dramatic increase in the amounts of sulphur dioxide and smoke emissions. The level of sulphur dioxide released rose massively to roughly 750 micrograms per cubic metre in the period between 1700 and 1750. This figure was well over threefold as high as that of smoke emitted, which was close to 250 micrograms per cubic metre.
Despite a declining number from 1750 to 1800, the pollution levels due to these two types of toxic fumes still increased until the year 1900, peaking at almost 1000 and 500 micrograms per cubic metre with respect to sulphur dioxide and smoke respectively. Since then, the level of emissions from both had recorded a fluctuation, until reaching 0 micrograms per cubic metre in 2000.
