The graph below shows trends in US meat and poultry consumption.
The line graph presents four types of meat and poultry consumed in the United States between 1955 and 2012.
It is clear that the consumption of beef was more than others between 1955 and 1976; it achieved the highest amount of 90 pounds in 1976. At the same period of time, the demand of pork was unstable and bottomed up with less than 40 pounds in 1976. Looking at the more detail, the consumption of broilers and turkey started to show up since 1961. The consumption of turkey rose to 10 pounds per person every year , until hitting a plateau at around 13 pounds after 1991.
Between 1976 and 1982, the consumption of beef started to plummet nearly to reach 20 pounds while the demand of pork increased by at least 10 pounds. The consumption of broilers exceeded the amount of pork, with figure at around 50 pounds in 1994; in 2010, it overtook the consumption of beef by reaching around 60 pounds. After 2009, consumption trend of each type of meat reached a plateau and started to dip later.
As a whole, the total demand of meat and poultry rose from 110 pounds to 180 pounds between 1955 and 2012.
