The graph shows the amount of money spent on books in Germany, France, Italy and Austria between 1995 and 2005. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line chart compares the spending on books by people living in four countries from 1995 to 2005.

It is obvious that expenditure on books increased in each country during the 10-year period, with the biggest rise taking place in Austria. Germans spent the most on books in each year.

In 1995, $80 million was spent on books by residents of Germany, while the figures for France and Italy were similar at just under $60 each and that for Austria was the lowest at $30 million. Over the following one decade, in spite of a minor decline between 1990 and 2003, expenditure on books in Germany grew steadily, finishing the period with around $97 million.

Similarly, the amount of money spent on books by Italians saw a dip of about $10 million between 1997 and 1999 but then climbed slowly to just over $50 million in 2005. In contrast, there was a sudden jump of nearly $30 in just 4 years between 2001 and 2005 in spending on books in Austria, which overtook the spending figure for Italy in 2003 and peaked at approximately $61 million in 2005. This was only slightly lower than the equivalent figure for France, where spending on books rose steadily over the whole 10 years.
