The graph shows the amount of money spent on books in Germany, France, Italy and Austria between 1995 and 2005. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The line chart compares the spending on books by people living in four countries from 1995 to 2005.

It is obvious that expenditure on books increased in each country during the 10-year period, with the biggest rise taking place in Austria. However, Germans spent by far the most on books in each year.

In 1995, $80 million was spent on books by residents of Germany. The figures for France and Italy were lower, at just under $60 million each, which was nearly double the amount of money used for books by people in Austria. However, this country saw a sharp increase in the expenses on books of approximately $32 million over only four years between 2001 and 2005, overtaking Italy in 2003 and peaking at just over $70 million in 2005. This was only slightly lower than the equivalent figure for France where the costs on books rose steadily by about $20 million over the whole 10 years.

Nevertheless, expenditure on books in German, in spite of some minor fluctuations, continued to be higher than that in other three countries over the following ten years and had increased to just under $100 million by 2005. Similarly, although Italy witnessed figures fluctuate slightly between 1995 and 1999, but it then climbed slowing to just over $60 million in 2005.
