In many countries today, people in cities either live alone or in small family units, rather than in large, extended family groups. Is this a positive or negative trend?

It is true that, in many countries today people live in small families or there is one person households. Living in larger families is becoming a rarity these days. In my opinion, this has a negative impact in many aspects.

Firstly, the traditional family support network is disappearing and this has a negative impact on children. Also, in larger families, members can do mutual sharing of each work. As a result, people can get some free time which can be utilised in some other work. Moreover, the nannies and babysitters are becoming common in every house but, babysitters may not give proper care to the children as compared to that given by their grandparents. In order to live in a short family younger generation is sending their parents to old age home instead of giving them love and care, they just leave them alone there, which is a greater loss to the family.

Next, lack of family support can make a person mentally sick . Huge number of people living alone suffers from psychological disorders which makes them moody, stressful and arrogant. Nowadays, people are becoming isolated which is leading to the rise in sedentary lifestyle. Also, a rise in juvenile delinquency can be seen today due to lack of love and support from the family. For example, everyday we can heard the news about different crimes committed by young adults. So, by living in larger families these can be reduced, as the older people will teach them about moral values and lessons of life.

To sum up, this trend of living alone or in shorter families must be stopped in order to save our younger generation.
