The chart illustrates the essential cause of why agricultural land being less fertile within three areas of the world in 1990s.

In general, there are three main reasons that affect land degradation: over-grazing, deforestation, and over-cultivation, and the total land being less productive more than 40% in total in three regions.

To begin with, over-grazing takes 35%, whereas deforestation, over-cultivation, and other reason spend 30%, 28%, and 7%, respectively. Both reasons cause 5% of overall land in North America becoming less productive. The top reason is that people do too much planting, so this made up more than half of the total land degraded. In contrast, more than 20% of total area being degraded in Europe. As can be seen, most of the land has degraded due to cutting down trees in the forest which is almost 10%, whereas over-cultivation and over-grazing are only 7.7% and 5.5%. Lastly, Oceania which consists of islands in the South Pacific, likewise Australia and New Zealand mainly degraded due to over-grazing and none caused by over-cultivation. Total land being less productive in this area is slightly less than 15%.

To sum up, the land becomes less fertile mainly causes by farming, then cutting down trees, and over-cultivation. Besides, Europe is the most impacted, then Oceania, and North America.
